How to compare forex brokers in six steps

  1. 1

    Check regulation first

A licence from a recognised authority such as the FCA, ASIC or CySEC means the broker is supervised, audited and usually must keep client money apart from its own. Offshore licences (for example SVG or Seychelles FSA) give lighter protection. More licences is good, but the strength of the main regulator matters most.

  2. 2

Add up the real cost of a trade

The “spread from” figure is the best case on the best account. Your true cost is spread plus any commission plus overnight swap. A 0.0-pip account with a $7 round-turn commission can cost more than a 1.0-pip account with no commission if you trade small sizes.

  3. 3

Treat leverage as a ceiling, not a target

1:2000 or 1:3000 lets you open large positions with little margin, which magnifies losses as fast as gains. What protects you is low effective leverage, a stop-loss on every trade and negative balance protection, so you can never owe more than your deposit.

  4. 4

Match the platform to how you trade

MetaTrader 4 is simple and has the most expert advisors. MetaTrader 5 adds more timeframes, depth of market and more asset classes. cTrader suits traders who want transparent pricing and advanced order types. Copy trading helps if you want to follow other traders.

  5. 5

    Test deposits and withdrawals

A low minimum deposit makes it easy to start, but fast withdrawals are what you will care about later. Start with a small amount, request a withdrawal early, and check fees for your local payment method.

  6. 6

    Try the account before committing

Open a demo account to check execution speed and slippage during news. If you need a swap-free account for religious reasons, or plan to scalp, confirm both are allowed in writing before you fund the account.

What each row in the comparison means

Minimum deposit
The smallest amount you can fund an account with. It does not change your trading cost, only how much you need to start.
Spread from
The gap between buy and sell price on the broker’s tightest account, measured in pips. Typical spreads are often wider, especially at market open or during news.
Maximum leverage
How large a position you can open per dollar of margin. At 1:1000, $10 of margin controls a $10,000 position. Leverage limits often drop for large balances or certain regions.
Commission
A fee charged per lot traded, usually on raw-spread accounts. Some brokers instead pay a rebate or cashback, shown here as a percentage.
Regulation
The financial authorities that licence the broker’s entities. Which entity you join depends on where you live, so check the licence that covers your account.
Negative balance protection
A guarantee that a sudden price gap cannot leave you owing money. Your account is reset to zero instead of going negative.
Segregated funds
Client money kept in separate bank accounts from the broker’s own cash, so it is not used to run the business or pay creditors.
Islamic account
A swap-free account that charges no overnight interest, designed for traders who follow Sharia principles.
